Telegram Secret Chats: End-to-End Encrypted Messaging Guide

Secret Chats are Telegram's end-to-end encrypted messaging feature. Unlike regular chats, messages in Secret Chats can only be read on the two devices involved in the conversation — not even Telegram can access them.

How to Start a Secret Chat

  1. Open the profile of the person you want to chat with
  2. Tap the three-dot menu (Android) or "..." (iOS)
  3. Select "Start Secret Chat"
  4. The chat opens with a lock icon and green encryption indicator

Note: Secret Chats can only be started on mobile devices (Android/iOS). They are not available on Telegram Desktop or Web.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are regular Telegram chats encrypted?

Yes, but with client-server encryption — Telegram encrypts messages in transit and stores them encrypted on their servers. However, Telegram holds the decryption keys. Secret Chats use end-to-end encryption where only the two participants can decrypt messages.

Can I use Secret Chats on Desktop?

No. Secret Chats can only be started and used on mobile devices (Android and iOS). This is because Secret Chats are tied to a specific device and do not sync across devices.

Do self-destructing messages really get deleted?

Yes, from both devices. However, the recipient could theoretically photograph their screen before the message self-destructs, or use a secondary device to capture it. Telegram notifies you of screenshots but cannot prevent all forms of capture.

Why does Telegram not use end-to-end encryption by default?

Telegram prioritizes cloud sync and multi-device access for regular chats, which requires server-side access to messages. End-to-end encryption prevents cloud features like syncing chats across devices, searching message history from any device, and seamless device switching.
