How to Delete Your Telegram Account Permanently
Deleting your Telegram account permanently removes all your messages, groups, channels, and contacts from Telegram's servers. This action is irreversible.
How to Delete Your Account
- Go to my.telegram.org/auth in your browser.
- Enter your phone number and log in with the verification code.
- Click "Delete Account".
- Confirm the deletion.
Note: Account deletion is only available through the web interface at my.telegram.org, not through the app.
What Gets Deleted
- All your messages in private chats (for both sides)
- All groups and channels you created (if you are the only admin)
- Your contacts and profile information
- Your username (becomes available for others to claim)
- Your User ID (permanently retired, never reused)
What Does NOT Get Deleted
- Messages you sent in groups (they remain but show "Deleted Account")
- Groups/channels that have other admins (they continue to exist)
- Files and media that other users have saved
Auto-Delete (Self-Destruct Timer)
Alternatively, you can set your account to auto-delete after a period of inactivity (1, 3, 6, or 12 months). Go to Settings, Privacy and Security, and find the "If Away For" option.
Before Deleting
- Export your chat history if you want to keep it.
- Transfer ownership of important groups/channels to another admin.
- Inform your contacts that you are leaving.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I recover my account after deletion?
No. Account deletion is permanent and irreversible. All data is erased from Telegram servers. You can create a new account with the same phone number, but it will be a completely fresh account with a new User ID.
Can I delete my account from the Telegram app?
No. For security reasons, account deletion is only available through the web interface at my.telegram.org. This prevents accidental deletion and ensures you have access to a browser for this critical action.
What happens to my username after I delete my account?
Your username becomes immediately available for anyone to claim. If you have a valuable username, consider transferring it to another account or bot before deleting.
