82 Crypto Projects Shut Down in 2026: What Went Wrong?

Crypto researcher Stacy Muur has identified 82 digital asset projects and protocols that reportedly shut down in 2026, describing the scale as unprecedented. Her list includes Balancer, Radiant Capital, Neon EVM and Step Finance. Separate research from DeFiLlama counted 100 announced shutdowns, including 40 during the preceding 90 days.

The closures followed a prolonged crypto bear market, with Bitcoin falling from an October 2025 record above $126,000 to below $60,000 earlier in 2026. Ethereum layer-2 network Blast, which had attracted more than $2 billion in deposits, shut down after concluding that it had no credible path to economic viability. Step Finance followed a major treasury breach, while Radiant Capital wound down after failing to recover from a 2024 exploit. Coinbase-backed Satori Finance also ceased operations because its revenue could no longer support the business.

DeFiLlama identified weak product-market fit as the most common reason for shutdowns, followed by depleted funding, insufficient revenue and pivots to other products. Collectively, the projects reviewed had raised approximately $1 billion and generated $250 million in cumulative fees. Nine had secured more than $50 million each, indicating that large amounts of capital did not guarantee long-term sustainability.

The shutdown wave highlights the difficulty of building sustainable crypto businesses amid weak user growth, declining market conditions and persistent security risks. The data suggests that funding alone cannot offset an inadequate business model, inadequate revenue or unresolved vulnerabilities across DeFi, blockchain infrastructure and Web3 gaming.
