Bitcoin Drops Below $80K as Gold Falls on Cooling US Bond Yields

Bitcoin (BTC) slipped below the $80,000 mark into Tuesday's Wall Street open, falling as low as $78,111 on Bitstamp after briefly touching 14-week highs of $81,265. The $80,000 zone, previously flagged by traders as an area of heavy sell-side liquidity, once again proved difficult to flip into support as US trading hours intensified downside pressure across both digital assets and precious metals.

Gold tracked Bitcoin lower, retreating to local lows of $4,605 per ounce after notching multimonth highs of $4,697 earlier in the session. The roughly 2% intraday drop in XAU/USD mirrored BTC's price action, while US equities moved in the opposite direction, with the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite Index posting modest gains of 0.2% and 0.5%, respectively. The divergence between crypto, gold, and stocks came even as trade tensions flared between Washington and Ottawa, after US President Donald Trump accused Canada on Truth Social of "ripping off" the United States in a renewed tariff spat.

US 30-year bond yields continued their cool-down, dropping below 5.2% and targeting their lowest levels since August 7. The shift followed last week's crypto rally, which coincided with yields reaching heights not seen since January 2007, prompting the US Treasury to expand debt buyback operations to tame the upside. According to trading commentary from The Kobeissi Letter, further bond-market intervention may be the only viable path to driving interest rates lower, since "the Fed cannot cut rates in this environment and the Trump Administration knows this."

Attention now turns to Wednesday's US inflation data and Nvidia's earnings report, both of which are expected to shape risk-asset sentiment for the remainder of the week. With Bitcoin failing to cement a reclaim of $80,000 and macroeconomic crosscurrents intensifying, traders are watching bond yields and equity strength for the next directional cue.
