Bitcoin Drops Below $82K as Hot US CPI Inflation and Oil Spike Rattle Markets

Bitcoin fell below $81,000 on Wednesday after hotter-than-expected US consumer inflation data combined with surging energy prices triggered a broad sell-off across crypto, gold, and equity futures. BTC/USD touched $81,926 on Bitstamp following the release of the September Consumer Price Index (CPI), which came in at 3.7% year-on-year, 0.1% above the 3.6% consensus forecast from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Fuel costs drove the increase, with gasoline rising 9.1% annually amid ongoing Middle East tensions and an oil-supply crisis that pushed the overall energy index up 5.2% for the month.

Inflation pressures were not limited to energy. Core CPI, which strips out volatile food and energy components, also exceeded expectations at 2.6% year-on-year. Carson Group chief macro strategist Sonu Varghese noted that broad-based inflation has become the norm rather than the exception, telling CNBC: "The only surprise is that investors keep getting surprised by broad-based inflation. And we've yet to see the full impact of higher diesel prices and the AI boom." US bond yields spiked to new 24-year highs on the news, while gold retreated to $4,079 per ounce as traders repositioned ahead of the Federal Reserve's next policy decision.

Markets immediately repriced Federal Reserve rate-cut expectations through CME Group's FedWatch Tool. The probability of a 25-basis-point interest-rate hike at the October 27-28 FOMC meeting jumped to 53.7%, up from just 22.1% the previous day. For December, odds of a second 25-basis-point hike climbed to 50%. Econoday economic analyst Theresa Sheehan suggested the Fed is likely to hold steady this month but maintain a hawkish bias: "Taken in combination with the soft payroll numbers in the September employment report, the FOMC is probably on hold for any rate moves at the upcoming October 27-28 meeting although with a definite bias toward a hike in December." Traders will get another key inflation signal on Friday with the release of the September Producer Price Index (PPI).
