Bitcoin Mining Stocks Surge 67% as BTC Rally Outpaces AI Infrastructure Plays

Bitcoin's roughly 23% rally over the past week has breathed new life into some of the hardest-hit names in crypto mining, with Canaan, American Bitcoin, and Cango posting gains of 41% to 67% and reversing months of underperformance relative to AI-focused infrastructure stocks. According to BlocksBridge Consulting's latest Miner Weekly newsletter, the surge outpaced AI-linked equities including CoreWeave (+21%), Nebius (+17%), and IREN (+15%), while several miners with heavier exposure to artificial intelligence and high-performance computing ended the period flat or lower. The data underscores that direct Bitcoin exposure remains a powerful driver of mining stock valuations, even as the sector has poured capital into AI data centers.

BlocksBridge identified three catalysts behind Bitcoin's breakout. The US Treasury Department's August 19 announcement to at least double the size of its liquidity-support buybacks for longer-dated securities boosted risk appetite across markets. A White House meeting with crypto executives followed, where President Donald Trump urged Congress to pass a "fair version" of the CLARITY Act, a stalled digital asset market structure bill. A subsequent short squeeze then amplified the move, liquidating more than $1.6 billion in crypto positions over a 24-hour window.

The mining sector's split performance highlights a stark imbalance in its AI pivot. Separate BlocksBridge analysis found that nine publicly traded miners have generated just $341.2 million in AI and HPC revenue so far in 2026, against roughly $5.11 billion in capital expenditures on the technology — a ratio of about $15 invested for every $1 earned. That gap explains why BTC price action, rather than AI narrative momentum, continues to dictate trading behavior across mining equities. Bitcoin's recent break above its 200-day moving average for the first time since November has only reinforced that dynamic, signaling a potential shift in sentiment for an industry caught between two powerful growth stories.
