Bitcoin Slips to $78.4K After Fed Chair Warsh Dismisses Soft Inflation Prints

Bitcoin traded volatile around $78,400 on Friday after Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh used his Jackson Hole Symposium keynote to caution that US inflation trends have not "meaningfully improved," despite recent softer CPI and PCE readings. Data from TradingView showed BTC/USD dipping to $78,442 on Bitstamp, down roughly 1% intraday, after an initial sell-off during the speech gave way to consolidation near $79,500. Traders had been eyeing a decisive break above the $80,000 level, but Warsh's hawkish tone effectively sidelined that attempt.

Warsh, delivering his first Jackson Hole address as Fed chair, doubled down on the central bank's 2% inflation target and announced that forward guidance would not return as a regular policy tool. "Forward guidance as a regular practice was adopted by my colleagues and me during the Global Financial Crisis," Warsh said. "It was essential at the time, and we introduced it with much fanfare. But, as with other legacies of crises past, I believe that the practice has overstayed its welcome." He added that lower summer inflation prints "do not tell me that underlying trends have meaningfully improved," reinforcing uncertainty around the timing of any rate cuts.

Despite the cautious Fed messaging, US equity markets held firm, with the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite both gaining roughly 0.5%. Warsh struck an optimistic note on business performance and AI sector growth, which helped offset his inflation remarks. Bitcoin continued to trade within a narrow intraday range as the market approaches its August monthly close.

Analysts say the next leg higher for BTC, particularly a sustained move above $83,000, will depend heavily on positioning in Bitcoin derivatives markets. With the Fed signaling less predictability in policy communication, traders are bracing for elevated volatility heading into September, a month historically associated with weaker crypto returns.
