Bitcoin Surges Past $86K as Analysts Declare Start of New Crypto Bull Market

Bitcoin crossed the $86,000 threshold for the first time since late January on Monday, spiking to a 33-week high of $86,332 on Bitstamp and gaining nearly 6% over 24 hours. The rally extended a strong Sunday weekly close at $81,120—Bitcoin's highest since early May—and was fueled by cooling oil prices and renewed risk appetite across global equities.

US stocks opened the week firmly higher, with the S&P 500 up 1% and the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index climbing 1.6%. The catalyst came from a sharp drop in WTI crude oil, which fell below $92 per barrel to as low as $91.59, after signals from Qatar's Foreign Ministry and US President Donald Trump suggested diplomatic negotiations to end the US-Iran conflict could resume. JPMorgan analysts noted that "Middle East oil flows remain surprisingly strong despite the disruption to Saudi Arabia's East-West pipeline." Meanwhile, The New York Times reported that the US plans to extend its trade deal with China by six months ahead of Chinese President Xi Jinping's visit on September 23-25.

The price surge triggered significant forced selling among bearish traders, with crypto short liquidations totaling nearly $800 million over 24 hours, according to CoinGlass data. Trading resource The Kobeissi Letter pointed to 50% gains for BTC/USD over just two months, declaring on X that crypto has entered "a new bull market." In a related move, Strategy purchased 950 Bitcoin for $76 million while simultaneously repurchasing $174 million in STRC.

Looking ahead, Bitfinex Alpha—the research arm of crypto exchange Bitfinex—identified three requirements for validating further upside: sustained buyer support, rising open interest, and fresh capital inflows into US spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds. With all three signals currently flashing positive, market participants appear increasingly confident that Bitcoin's breakout could have more room to run.
