Bitcoin Treasury Buying May Rebound on Rally, But Easy Money Era Is Over

Corporate Bitcoin purchases slowed sharply in Q3 2026, but analysts say a price rally could reignite treasury accumulation—though under far more selective conditions than the 2025 boom. According to data shared by Bitwise head of research Ryan Rasmussen, Strategy's net Bitcoin additions fell to just 1,666 BTC in Q3, down from 83,901 BTC in Q2. Other public companies followed suit, adding a combined 5,617 BTC compared with 45,725 BTC the previous quarter, signaling a broad retreat from the aggressive stockpiling seen earlier in the cycle.

Speaking to Cointelegraph, Bitfinex head of derivatives Jag Kooner said renewed buying could emerge if treasury companies regain premiums to the value of their Bitcoin holdings. However, he cautioned that investor appetite has fundamentally shifted since last year's frenzy. "Shareholders have seen premiums collapse and some companies sell into weakness," Kooner noted. "Investors are now pricing these businesses on funding costs, balance-sheet discipline and bitcoin per share." Rasmussen echoed that sentiment, suggesting the most disciplined buyers will lead any recovery—particularly operating businesses funding purchases from cash flow rather than issuing stock.

The pullback was reinforced by Bitwise's October market report, which documented a decline in the total number of Bitcoin treasury companies during Q3. Roughly a dozen firms that entered the space during the 2025 boom liquidated their entire holdings, mostly to repay debt or return capital to shareholders after stock premiums evaporated. Kooner expects any revival to favor established players with proven balance sheets. "Initially, capital would likely gravitate towards established players, which have the scale, the liquidity in their own securities and the track record investors now demand," he said.

Looking ahead, both analysts agree a broader resurgence of new treasury listings would likely follow—rather than precede—a sustained Bitcoin rally. For now, the indiscriminate capital-raising environment that defined 2025 appears firmly behind the market, replaced by a more rigorous, fundamentals-driven approach to corporate Bitcoin allocation.
