Bitcoin's Quantum Defenses Strengthen as Solana Validators Approve Major Inflation Cut

Two separate efforts advanced Bitcoin's post-quantum security this week, despite ongoing skepticism within the community about the immediacy of the threat. StarkWare researcher Avihu Levy successfully tested an experimental quantum-resistant transaction on Bitcoin's mainnet, spending a 10,000-satoshi output protected by his Quantum Safe Bitcoin (QSB) scheme. The approach combines hash-based one-time signatures with computational searches that bind an authorization to a specific transaction, shielding outputs during the brief window when public keys are exposed in the mempool. While promising, the method is impractical for everyday use, with each transaction taking hours and costing between $150 and $200.

Separately, Blockstream researchers published a Bitcoin Improvement Proposal on August 27 introducing the SHRINCS signature scheme. The team has reduced a hash-based post-quantum signature by roughly 13.23 times, though it remains about nine times larger than Bitcoin's current signatures and carries notable trade-offs. Blockstream researcher Jonas Nick called it "the first concrete proposal for a post-quantum signature scheme designed specifically for Bitcoin," adding that while it is "not optimal along every axis," it represents a strong trade-off among available options.

In the Solana ecosystem, validators approved SGP-0002, known as Double Disinflation, with 67% support, 25.16% opposed, and 7.84% abstaining. Participation reached 60.7% of eligible stake. The measure doubles Solana's annual disinflation rate from 15% to 30%, keeping the long-term 1.5% inflation target intact while canceling an estimated 18.9 million SOL in issuance over the next six years and accelerating the timeline to reach terminal inflation from roughly 5.7 years to about 2.8 years.

Onchain activity on Solana also reached new heights in July, processing a record 4.2 billion transactions, up 13.5% from June and roughly 2 billion higher than December, according to data highlighted by The Kobeissi Letter. Meanwhile, Bernstein has set a bullish target for Bitcoin this cycle, projecting a peak of $500,000.
