CFTC Chair: AI Agents Could Stake ETH and Launch Memecoins

CFTC Chairman Michael Selig says autonomous AI agents could soon use cryptocurrency to make real-world purchases, stake Ether and even launch memecoins. Speaking at the CFTC’s inaugural Frontier Forum in Washington, D.C., Selig described a refrigerator that earns yield from staking and spends it on groceries as “no longer science fiction,” highlighting how AI could become an active participant in financial markets.

Selig argued that existing regulation is poorly suited to software that can hold assets and execute transactions without direct human instructions. He asked whether AI developers should register, who should be liable when an agent acts recklessly, and how regulators can identify users behind interconnected automated trading systems. He also proposed a “know-your-agent” framework designed to supplement traditional know-your-customer requirements.

The CFTC chair said AI could democratize sophisticated financial tools by giving smaller investors and businesses faster access to data processing, risk management and trading strategies. At the same time, autonomous systems may react unexpectedly to market conditions, produce correlated trades when many use similar models, and move too quickly for effective market surveillance.

Adoption is already broadening. An eToro survey released in September found that 79% of US millennial investors and 77% of Gen Z investors had used or were open to using AI to select or adjust investments. Selig said regulators must now determine how oversight should work when economic decisions are made by autonomous agents rather than identifiable human traders.
