Chelsea FC Lands USDC Sponsor as FCA Eyes Crypto Football Deals

Circle, the issuer of the USDC stablecoin, has secured a front-of-jersey sponsorship deal with Chelsea Football Club for the 2026/2027 season, marking one of the most prominent stablecoin placements in European football. The partnership, announced Friday, will see the USDC brand appear on Chelsea's kits, positioning the dollar-pegged digital asset in front of millions of Premier League viewers worldwide. Circle's UK arm, Circle UK Trading Limited, has been registered with the Financial Conduct Authority since 2018 to provide certain financial services to UK residents.

The deal comes roughly three months after the FCA sent warning letters to Premier League clubs — potentially including Chelsea — over "unauthorized" crypto companies using sponsorship agreements to market financial products to football fans. The regulator flagged these arrangements as potential breaches of UK financial services law, even as stablecoins themselves remain legal to use in the country. Lawmakers are currently drafting a comprehensive regulatory framework for digital assets, with new FCA standards for stablecoin issuers set to take effect in October 2027.

Notably, Circle disclosed that USDC is "issued by certain regulated affiliates" but is "not issued or regulated under the laws of the United Kingdom," underscoring the cross-border nature of stablecoin regulation. The FCA declined to comment when approached, while Circle did not respond to requests for comment before publication. The sponsorship highlights a growing tension between the commercial appetite of football clubs for crypto-linked revenue and the UK's tightening oversight of how digital asset firms engage with retail audiences.
