Chelsea FC Signs Circle USDC Jersey Deal Despite UK FCA Crypto Warning

Circle, the issuer of the USDC stablecoin, has been announced as the new front-of-shirt sponsor for Chelsea Football Club ahead of the 2026/2027 Premier League season. The partnership places the USDC brand alongside Chelsea's men's and women's squads, marking one of the highest-profile stablecoin sponsorships in European football to date. The deal comes roughly three months after the UK's Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) issued warning letters to several Premier League clubs—including potentially Chelsea—over sponsorship arrangements with unauthorized financial and crypto firms targeting supporters.

Circle UK Trading Limited, the company's UK subsidiary, has been registered with the FCA as an authorized firm offering certain financial services to UK residents since 2018. Stablecoins like USDC remain legal to use in Britain, though the government is still drafting a comprehensive regulatory framework for digital assets. The FCA confirmed it will begin enforcing new standards on stablecoin issuers and other digital asset firms in October 2027. Despite the sponsorship messaging, Circle noted that USDC itself is "not issued or regulated under the laws of the United Kingdom," but rather by regulated affiliates elsewhere.

The FCA declined to comment on whether Circle's Chelsea deal triggered any further review, and Circle did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Industry observers say the partnership signals growing mainstream acceptance of regulated stablecoins in elite sport, even as regulators sharpen their scrutiny of crypto-related marketing in football. The move follows a broader trend of digital asset firms seeking visibility through top-tier European clubs, though the FCA's earlier intervention underscores the fine line between authorized and unauthorized promotion in the UK market.
