Chinese Suspect in $75M Crypto Crime Network Arrested in Bangkok

Thai police have arrested a 37-year-old Chinese man in Bangkok for his involvement in an international crime network accused of laundering more than 500 million yuan (approximately $75 million), according to Thai media outlet Khaosod English. Investigators allege the suspect operated cryptocurrency and foreign-currency exchanges on behalf of criminal groups, processing transactions across more than 133 accounts.

According to police, the suspect also arranged visas for members of international crime organizations linked to other money-laundering cases. Investigators said he attempted to evade capture by submitting false documents to report his residence and frequently changing vehicle registration plates before authorities tracked him to a luxury house in Bangkok. His Thai visa had expired more than three years ago, and he now faces legal proceedings before coordination with Chinese authorities for his return to face an outstanding warrant.

The arrest comes amid a broader crackdown on cyber-enabled crypto fraud in Southeast Asia. In June, Coinbase froze more than $3 million in cryptocurrency tied to a global operation targeting scam networks in the region. That effort, led by the U.S. Department of Justice's Scam Center Strike Force, brought together Meta, Microsoft, and Starlink to dismantle servers and hosting infrastructure linked to criminal activity across more than 1.4 million social media and email accounts, leading to multiple arrests by the Royal Thai Police Anti-Cyber Scam Center. FinCEN has separately tied more than $13 billion in crypto scams to non-U.S. operations, underscoring the scale of cross-border crypto-related financial crime.
