Circle Eyes 40 Emerging Markets as Stablecoin Remittances Cut Costs 84%

Circle, the issuer behind the USDC stablecoin, is targeting expansion into roughly 40 developing markets spanning Southeast Asia, Latin America, Africa, and the Middle East, according to CEO and chairman Jeremy Allaire. Speaking on the sidelines of the IMF and World Bank meetings in Bangkok, Allaire described the move as a transition "from the early adopter phase of blockchain technology into the mainstream scaling phase," with rising demand for dollar-pegged digital assets driving the geographic push. Circle's strategy reflects growing institutional appetite for stablecoins as cross-border payment rails in regions underserved by traditional banking.

A new report from payments network Borderless.xyz underscores the economic case. The firm's third-quarter analysis found that stablecoin-funded remittances cost roughly 84% less than traditional money transfers, with a median fee of just $2 (1%) on a $200 send compared with $12.72 (6.36%) for conventional channels. Savings were most pronounced in emerging economies: Sub-Saharan Africa saw costs of 2.9% versus 8.46% for legacy services, while Latin America posted 1.25% versus 5.64%. Business transfers told a similar story, with a $10,000 stablecoin payment to the eurozone costing as little as $26 against $135–$150 for an international bank wire. Settlement was also faster in several markets, with median times of two minutes in Brazil and Colombia and three minutes in Mexico, though reliability varied, from 98.6% completion in Mexico to 73% in Costa Rica.

Separately, the Solana Foundation postponed its Solana Accelerate event in Shanghai after registrations exceeded local venue capacity, according to Solana's Liu. The event, part of Solana's global conference circuit aimed at developers and institutional partners, will be rescheduled as the network continues to court enterprise sponsors across the region.

Together, these developments paint a picture of a crypto industry maturing beyond speculation and into payments infrastructure, with stablecoins leading the charge into emerging markets where remittance corridors remain costly and slow.
