Crypto Banter Founder: Regulation Is Hyperliquid's Biggest Risk
Ran Neuner, founder of Crypto Banter, has identified regulatory uncertainty as the single greatest threat facing Hyperliquid, the layer-1 blockchain whose decentralized perpetual futures exchange leads the sector with approximately $223 billion in trading volume over the past 30 days, according to DeFiLlama data. Speaking on Cointelegraph's Chain Reaction podcast, Neuner noted that while governments have begun establishing frameworks for centralized crypto exchanges—including MiCA licensing in Europe—he expects decentralized platforms to face similar scrutiny next. "The biggest issue is that we don't know how regulators are going to treat the decentralized exchanges," Neuner said, predicting regulators will shift focus to DEXs once centralized exchange rules are finalized.
Despite the regulatory concerns, Neuner struck an optimistic tone about Hyperliquid's competitive position, arguing that the platform's entrenched network effects create a durable moat that rivals cannot easily replicate. Drawing a parallel to ride-hailing giant Uber, he noted that "you can't copy a network," explaining that traders naturally gravitate toward exchanges offering the deepest liquidity because it allows them to enter and exit positions with minimal slippage. This network-driven dynamic, Neuner argued, means even well-funded competitors launching lookalike products will struggle to siphon meaningful volume from Hyperliquid.
On the regulatory front, signs of a potential breakthrough have already emerged. In August, President Donald Trump stated that CFTC Chair Michael Selig was actively working to bring Hyperliquid into the United States in a "fully compliant and legal fashion," sending HYPE up roughly 20% within 24 hours to around $70. However, as of the announcement, neither the CFTC nor Hyperliquid had disclosed a formal proposal, application, or timeline for launching compliant US access. As of Friday, HYPE was trading near $82, up more than 220% year-to-date according to CoinGecko, reflecting growing investor confidence that a regulated US pathway could materialize alongside the network's existing dominance.
