Crypto Billionaires Pour Record $97M Into Farage's Reform UK

Reform UK, the political party led by Nigel Farage, has received a combined 72 million pounds (approximately $97 million) from two cryptocurrency billionaires in what represents the largest donation ever made to a British political party. Ben Delo, co-founder of the BitMEX cryptocurrency exchange, announced a 36 million pound contribution on Friday, which was matched within 24 hours by Christopher Harborne, a prominent crypto investor and known donor to the party. Harborne revealed his matching gift through an op-ed in The Telegraph, stating he expected nothing in return: "No peerage, no policy change, just a party that is ready for government."

Delo explained in The Telegraph that his donation was structured as 1 million pounds per month leading up to the next general election in 2029, but he paid the full amount upfront to preempt any potential legal blocks. Both billionaires framed their contributions as efforts to ensure a "fair fight" at the polls, with Farage welcoming the funding as a means to contest the election on "a level playing field." The donations come amid heightened scrutiny of crypto money in UK politics following earlier reports that Farage had received millions from Harborne and George Cottrell, prompting Labour MPs to push for making a moratorium on crypto donations permanent.

The contributions raise further questions about the growing influence of digital asset wealth on political campaigns. Delo himself carries a notable regulatory history: he was one of three BitMEX co-founders, alongside Arthur Hayes and Samuel Reed, who pleaded guilty to federal charges in the United States for violations of the Bank Secrecy Act. Although Delo agreed to a $10 million fine in 2022, he did not serve prison time and was later included in a presidential pardon. The scale of the Reform UK donations is likely to intensify the ongoing debate among UK lawmakers over whether crypto-linked political funding requires stricter oversight.
