Crypto News Today: Poland Upholds Veto, Sheriffs Drop CLARITY Act Opposition

Polish lawmakers failed to overturn President Karol Nawrocki's veto of crypto legislation aimed at tightening oversight of the country's digital asset market, with the Sejm falling 25 votes short of the required three-fifths majority in a 241-198 vote. The defeat comes as the investigation into collapsed Polish exchange Zondacrypto widens, with Prime Minister Donald Tusk citing witness testimony alleging payments and attempts to influence politicians linked to Poland's previous government. Zondacrypto's Estonian operator, BB Trade Estonia, was declared bankrupt in August, while Polish prosecutors continue probing suspected fraud and money laundering connected to the platform.

The National Sheriffs' Association reversed course on the CLARITY Act, shifting its position to "neutral" in a letter to Senate leaders ahead of a key cloture vote scheduled for Sept. 15. The group, which had previously warned that provisions exempting certain crypto mixers from registration requirements would hinder law enforcement's ability to trace transactions and recover stolen funds, said work by Congress, the Trump administration, and other stakeholders had addressed its concerns. The House passed the bill in July 2025, though it has since faced disputes over stablecoin rewards, tokenized equities, and potential conflicts involving President Trump's family. The SEC and CFTC have signaled they could move ahead with parts of crypto regulation even if Congress fails to pass the legislation.

Meanwhile, the IMF confirmed that El Salvador used no public funds for its post-review Bitcoin accumulation and transferred majority control of the state-backed Chivo wallet to a private operator. The clarification addresses longstanding questions about how President Nayib Bukele's government has funded its ongoing BTC purchases amid the country's IMF lending arrangement.

Crypto markets traded mixed on Friday, with Solana (SOL) up 3.92% to $106.39 and Hyperliquid (HYPE) gaining 4.16% to $88.45, while Bitcoin (BTC) edged up 0.35% to $79,914.23 and Ethereum (ETH) rose 1.91% to $2,501.49.
