Crypto Winter Continues: 82 Blockchain Projects Shut Down in 2026
Crypto ventures are collapsing at an unprecedented pace in 2026, with researcher Stacy Muur identifying 82 digital asset projects and protocols that have ceased operations this year. The wave of shutdowns spans DeFi, blockchain infrastructure, and Web3 gaming, raising serious concerns about the financial sustainability of the sector. Projects including Ethereum layer-2 network Blast, Balancer, Radiant Capital, Neon EVM, and Step Finance are among the most notable casualties on Muur's list, published on X this week.
Blast's closure earlier this month marked one of the year's most dramatic reversals—a network that once attracted more than $2 billion in deposits announced it could not find a "credible path" to economic viability. Step Finance shut down in February after a major treasury breach, while Radiant Capital followed in June, unable to recover from a devastating 2024 exploit. Coinbase-backed Satori Finance also folded, citing an inability to sustain operations with current revenue levels.
Research from DeFiLlama corroborates the trend, identifying 100 crypto projects that announced shutdowns in 2026, including 40 within a 90-day span. The most common cause was a lack of product-market fit, followed by depleted funding, insufficient revenue, and strategic pivots. Combined, these shuttered projects had raised approximately $1 billion and generated just $250 million in cumulative fees—nine of them had raised more than $50 million each, proving that deep pockets offered no guarantee of survival. Meanwhile, venture funding data shows capital concentrating among fewer players, suggesting the shakeout is far from over.
