Cuomo Warns Crypto Lobby: Heavy Republican Backing Risks Alienating Democrats

Former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo cautioned the crypto industry at Token2049 on Tuesday that its heavy financial backing of Republicans could undermine bipartisan support needed to pass federal crypto legislation, including the CLARITY Act. Speaking alongside OKX CEO Star Xu, Cuomo said the industry "believed in investing heavily in the Republican Party," but stressed that legislative success requires balance. "When you invest heavily in the Republican Party, by definition, you're going to alienate Democrats," Cuomo said. "You need Democrats to pass the bill. You need Republicans. You have to be more balanced."

The imbalance is visible in recent spending data. Crypto-focused political action committees tracked by Tech Influence Watch have spent $54.3 million supporting Republicans in the 2026 election cycle, compared with $26.2 million supporting Democrats. An additional $23.2 million has been deployed to oppose Democrats outright. With Kalshi prediction markets placing the odds of Democrats winning both chambers of Congress at roughly 61% as of Thursday, Cuomo warned that a Democratic-controlled legislature could either roll back the Trump administration's crypto initiatives or partner with the administration to advance the full CLARITY Act.

Cuomo pushed back on the perception that Democrats are inherently hostile to crypto, arguing the technology aligns naturally with the party's mission of expanding financial access. "As a matter of fact, I could argue that the crypto technology is exactly suited to the Democratic Party," he said. "It's empowering people who otherwise wouldn't have access to financial products, and the Democratic Party has been working to do that all its life." Bipartisan support for crypto legislation has materialized before: in July 2025, 78 House Democrats joined 216 Republicans to pass the CLARITY Act, and 18 Democratic senators backed the GENIUS Act when it cleared the Senate in June 2025. Still, all Senate Democrats and four Republicans voted against advancing the CLARITY Act in a September procedural vote, with concerns centered on potential conflicts of interest tied to President Trump's crypto ventures.
