ECB Launches Pontes Platform to Settle Tokenized Assets in Central Bank Money

The European Central Bank (ECB) officially launched Pontes on Monday, a new settlement system enabling financial institutions to complete wholesale tokenized asset transactions using central bank money rather than private alternatives like stablecoins. The platform was unveiled as a core pillar of the Eurosystem's broader strategy for tokenized finance, with full implementation and expanded operating hours targeted for 2028.

Pontes allows institutions to represent traditional assets as digital tokens on distributed ledger technology (DLT) networks, combining issuance, trading, settlement, custody, and servicing on a single unified platform. Smart contract automation streamlines wholesale transactions, potentially reducing costs and settlement times. "Pontes brings the stability and trust of central bank money to the European tokenised finance ecosystem," said ECB Executive Board member Piero Cipollone. "It will give an important advantage to help it scale."

The system builds on the Eurosystem's 2024 trials of DLT-based settlement in central bank money, where participants consistently flagged access to a risk-free settlement asset as a critical requirement for broader adoption of tokenized finance. Pontes launches with an initial core service set, with additional participants expected to onboard gradually through 2028.

Alongside Pontes, the Eurosystem is developing Appia, a complementary initiative aimed at building an integrated ecosystem for DLT-based financial services, with its own blueprint also expected by 2028. The dual-track approach signals the ECB's commitment to establishing public infrastructure for tokenized markets as European finance groups continue pushing to lift regulatory caps on tokenized securities.
