Gemini Wins Singapore MPI License for Crypto Payment Services

Crypto exchange Gemini has secured a Major Payment Institution (MPI) license from the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), fully authorizing its local entity, Gemini Digital Payments Singapore, to operate across the Asia-Pacific region. The license, announced on Wednesday, permits Gemini to provide digital payment token services and cross-border money transfers without being subject to the standard transaction-volume limits imposed on lower-tier payment institutions.

The approval completes a regulatory process that began in October 2024 when MAS first granted Gemini in-principle approval. In April 2025, Gemini migrated its Singapore-based customers from Gemini Trust Company, which had been operating under an exemption framework, to its locally incorporated entity pending final authorization. The MAS Financial Institutions Directory now lists Gemini Digital Payments Singapore among authorized MPI holders, a category reserved for firms facing more comprehensive oversight due to the elevated risk profile of their transaction volumes.

Gemium has actively served Singaporean customers since 2020, offering spot crypto trading, digital asset custody, and over-the-counter services. President and co-founder Cameron Winklevoss highlighted the company's long-standing presence in the market, while CEO Tyler Winklevoss described Singapore as a strategic hub for serving both retail and institutional clients across the region. The Winklevoss twins have positioned the Singapore license as a key milestone in Gemini's broader international expansion strategy.

The Singapore approval adds to Gemini's growing list of regulatory credentials as crypto exchanges increasingly compete for institutional-grade compliance across major financial centers. With Asia-Pacific demand for compliant crypto infrastructure continuing to rise, Gemini's MPI license gives the firm a competitive edge over rivals operating under lighter regulatory frameworks in the region.
