Hunter Biden Says $LAPTOP Memecoin Was Anti-Trump Troll, Not Rug Pull

Hunter Biden, son of former US President Joe Biden, addressed criticism of the $LAPTOP memecoin in a series of X posts on Wednesday, providing blockchain data and a breakdown of the token's launch and subsequent price action. The memecoin, launched Sept. 9 and based on the infamous Hunter Biden laptop saga, saw its price peak at roughly $317 before charts, in Biden's words, "looked like every celebrity rug ever." According to Biden, 300 million tokens held in wallets associated with the project's founders "haven't moved since launch," contradicting rug-pull accusations.

The data Biden published largely tracks a "launch report" prepared by Delaware-based intelligence consultancy Groom Lake and posted on laptoptoken.com. The report identified two unnamed professional market makers hired by the project, one of which withdrew liquidity 84 seconds after the token's price topped out, while the other netted approximately $2.18 million through trading. Market Maker 1 reportedly made $686,000 from liquidity positions on decentralized exchanges, and the report noted that cash available to sellers near the current price "dropped from $16,157 to zero" after the withdrawal.

Biden framed the project as a deliberate provocation aimed at Trump-linked crypto ventures. "Trump's coin was max extraction, and I wanted to troll every grift like it," he wrote, referencing World Liberty Financial, the Trump family's crypto company. He said the team committed to a token lock-up, published a MiCA disclosure, and intended to allocate 5% of tokens to charity. Biden added that he was motivated in part to "piss off Don and Eric," referring to Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump, and "every [Key Opinion Leader] who called it a scam because we refused to pay them."

The $LAPTOP memecoin takes its name from the laptop computer that became a flashpoint in the 2020 US presidential election and remains a touchstone for right-wing commentators. Biden has previously filed two lawsuits over privacy laws related to the device and has been a vocal critic of Trump-family crypto projects. His detailed accounting of the launch represents an unusual step in celebrity memecoin culture, where post-mortem transparency is rare, and sets up a direct contrast with how Trump-affiliated tokens have handled similar scrutiny.
