Hunter Biden to Launch $LAPTOP Memecoin, Airdrop to TRUMP Holders

Hunter Biden, son of former U.S. President Joe Biden, is set to launch a memecoin named $LAPTOP on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, according to a Monday announcement on X and reporting from The Wall Street Journal. The token derives its name from Biden's infamous laptop, which became a flashpoint of political controversy ahead of the 2020 presidential election and remains a recurring subject of right-wing media coverage. Biden filed two lawsuits over privacy violations related to the laptop's contents.

The $LAPTOP token will have a total supply of one billion, with 20% (200 million tokens) earmarked for distribution to Substack subscribers, members of a Biden mailing list, and holders of President Donald Trump's Official Trump (TRUMP) memecoin. The TRUMP token has lost approximately 97% of its value since hitting an all-time high in January 2025. The LAPTOP founders, who hold 30% of the supply, have stated they will burn up to 30% of the memecoins depending on certain outcomes, including a Democrat winning the presidency in 2028, Bitcoin reaching a new all-time high, or $LAPTOP's fully diluted valuation exceeding TRUMP's.

Since leaving office in January 2025, Joe Biden has become increasingly vocal about crypto and blockchain policy, specifically criticizing the Trump family's involvement in the industry through World Liberty Financial. In August, he called World Liberty "corruption at a scale we've never seen," drawing comparisons to defunct exchange FTX and flagging its ties to foreign governments including the UAE. Hunter Biden echoed similar themes in June, stating that "decentralized digital currency and the blockchain are the inevitable future."

The timing of the $LAPTOP launch coincides with a pivotal moment for U.S. crypto regulation. The Digital Asset Market Clarity (CLARITY) Act is scheduled for a cloture vote in the Senate on September 15. If passed, the legislation would establish a comprehensive market structure framework for the digital asset industry, potentially subjecting political memecoins like $LAPTOP and TRUMP to new regulatory scrutiny. Cointelegraph reached out to the White House for comment but did not receive an immediate response.
