Hyperliquid's Biggest Risk Is Regulation, Says Ran Neuner

Ran Neuner, founder of Crypto Banter, has identified regulatory uncertainty as the greatest threat facing Hyperliquid, the layer-1 blockchain dominating decentralized perpetual futures trading. Speaking on Cointelegraph's Chain Reaction podcast, Neuner argued that governments have only just begun regulating centralized crypto exchanges through frameworks like MiCA licensing, and that decentralized exchanges will inevitably be next in line. "The biggest issue is that we don't know how regulators are going to treat the decentralized exchanges," Neuner said, warning that the sector's legal trajectory remains undefined.

Despite those concerns, Neuner expressed strong confidence in Hyperliquid's competitive position. The platform has recorded approximately $223 billion in perpetual DEX trading volume over the past 30 days, according to DeFiLlama, making it the clear category leader. Neuner attributed that dominance to network effects, drawing a parallel to Uber and other platform-based businesses where liquidity depth and user concentration create barriers that competitors cannot replicate simply by copying technology. "You can't copy a network," he said. "When something is a network, naturally users will flock to the busiest or the best node."

In a potentially significant counterpoint, US officials have signaled that Hyperliquid may gain a compliant pathway into the American market. In August, President Donald Trump stated that CFTC Chair Michael Selig was working to bring Hyperliquid into the US in a "fully compliant and legal fashion," sending HYPE up roughly 20% over the surrounding 24-hour period. As of the announcement, neither the CFTC nor Hyperliquid had released formal details on how US access would work, whether an application had been submitted, or when a compliant service might launch.

HYPE was trading near $82 on Friday, up more than 220% year-to-date. Hyperliquid Strategies, a treasury firm tied to the token, recently expanded its equity facility to $2.5 billion, signaling growing institutional conviction in the project even as Neuner's regulatory warning lingers over the sector's long-term outlook.
