Ireland Excludes Crypto From New Tax-Advantaged Investment Accounts
Ireland's Department of Finance has unveiled plans for a new tax-advantaged investment account aimed at boosting retail investing, but crypto assets and derivatives will be excluded from the preferential structure. In a roadmap published Monday, the department classified digital assets as "highly complex and risky," placing them outside the framework designed to make investing more accessible and tax-efficient for Irish residents.
The eligible products under the proposed accounts will include stocks, bonds, exchange-traded funds, and other investment funds. The accounts are expected to be available to Irish residents next year, though no specific launch date has been confirmed. The applicable tax rate and tax-free threshold will be announced in Ireland's Budget 2027.
The crypto exclusion reflects regulators' ongoing cautious stance toward digital assets and comes alongside broader moves to tighten oversight of the sector. Ireland has been advancing proposed reforms to strengthen Anti-Money Laundering requirements for crypto businesses operating in the country. Together, these measures signal a more restrictive regulatory environment for digital assets even as the government works to encourage broader participation in traditional investment markets.
