Justin Sun: Tron's Post-Quantum Cryptography Goes Live on Testnet

Justin Sun, founder of the Tron blockchain network, announced on Saturday that the company's post-quantum cryptography has gone live on testnet. "We're closely tracking progress in quantum computing and AI, and we're ready to bring quantum resistance to mainnet at any time," Sun wrote in a post on X. He added that Tron is positioned to become "one of the few major blockchains that is quantum-resistant before Q-Day" — the anticipated moment when quantum computers become powerful enough to break current cryptographic standards.

The announcement builds on earlier momentum in the post-quantum blockchain space. On July 28, blockchain security firm AmericanFortress unveiled a cryptographic framework designed to shield crypto wallets from future quantum attacks without requiring users to migrate funds, rotate keys, or change wallet addresses. The company published its proposal as a technical paper on the Cryptography ePrint Archive, though it has not yet been peer-reviewed. Unlike most competing proposals, the approach allows existing wallet addresses to remain unchanged while layering in quantum-resistant protections.

Developers across the industry are racing to address the long-term quantum threat to elliptic-curve cryptography, which currently secures Bitcoin, Ethereum, and most other major blockchain networks. Earlier this year, a Strategy-led consortium committed $15 million to fund Bitcoin quantum security research, the Ethereum Foundation published a proposal outlining a migration path toward quantum-resistant account cryptography, and Algorand announced plans to roll out quantum-resistant accounts by 2027. Tron's testnet deployment adds another major network to that list, though Sun's announcement stopped short of committing to a firm mainnet timeline.
