Meanwhile Raises $37.5M to Expand Bitcoin Life Insurance Globally
Bermuda-based Meanwhile, a life insurer licensed to operate entirely in Bitcoin, has closed a $37.5 million funding round led by Bain Capital Crypto. Existing backers Haun Ventures, Framework Ventures, Pantera Capital, Apollo, Northwestern Mutual Future Ventures, and Morgan Creek Digital also participated, bringing the company's total raised to more than $180 million.
The new capital comes amid surging international demand for Meanwhile's Bitcoin-denominated life insurance policies, particularly from clients in Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. CEO and co-founder Zac Townsend attributed the growth to high-net-worth families seeking regulated estate planning solutions for their Bitcoin holdings. "Wealthy families around the world already hold Bitcoin. What they haven't had is a regulated way to pass it on," Townsend said.
Meanwhile launched BTC Life 1-Pay in early 2026, a single-premium whole life policy designed for non-U.S. clients, following the earlier BTC 10-Pay product tailored for U.S. taxpayers. The company reports that net long-term underwriting income has already exceeded last year's total and is on track to more than double in 2026, though specific figures were not disclosed. Meanwhile counts OpenAI CEO Sam Altman among its prominent backers.
The funding round highlights growing institutional interest in Bitcoin-native financial services as macro instability drives demand for alternative wealth preservation tools. Meanwhile's expansion comes as other firms, including insurance broker WTW, are also moving into the digital asset protection space through acquisitions and new product launches.
