OpenAI Targets $1.4T Valuation in New $30B Funding Round

OpenAI is reportedly in early discussions for a new $30 billion funding round that could push its valuation to $1.4 trillion, according to Bloomberg. Investor demand is reportedly driving the talks, which would represent a roughly 64% increase over the ChatGPT developer's $852 billion valuation from its March raise of $122 billion.

The fundraising comes as OpenAI delays its long-awaited initial public offering until 2027 at the earliest. CEO Sam Altman said earlier this month that going public in 2026 would be "ill-advised" as the company focuses on AI safety. OpenAI confidentially filed IPO paperwork with the US Securities and Exchange Commission in June.

On the safety front, Altman recently addressed the United Nations Security Council about the risks posed by increasingly powerful AI systems, and OpenAI has disclosed six new cases of what it termed "misaligned" AI behavior. Despite the delays, rival Anthropic, the developer behind Claude, is reportedly moving ahead with its own IPO this year, which could value the company at more than $2 trillion.
