Poland Crypto Bill Fails Override Vote as CLARITY Act Gains Ground

Polish lawmakers fell short on Friday in their attempt to overturn President Karol Nawrocki's veto of a crypto oversight bill, failing to reach the required three-fifths majority in the Sejm by 25 votes. The 241-198 vote, with three abstentions, preserves the veto and leaves the legislation stalled as the investigation into collapsed exchange Zondacrypto continues to expand. Prime Minister Donald Tusk cited witness testimony alleging payments and attempts to influence politicians connected to Poland's previous government. Zondacrypto's Estonian operator, BB Trade Estonia, was declared bankrupt in August, while Polish prosecutors probe suspected fraud and money laundering linked to the platform.

Meanwhile, the CLARITY Act cleared a major hurdle after the National Sheriffs' Association dropped its opposition and shifted to a "neutral" stance ahead of a key Senate vote this month. In a letter to Senate leaders, the group credited Congress, the Trump administration and other stakeholders with addressing prior legal and enforcement concerns, saying it would now "step back" to let lawmakers shape a digital asset regulatory framework. The association had previously warned that provisions exempting certain crypto mixers from registration could hinder transaction tracing and stolen-fund recovery. Senate Majority Leader John Thune has filed for a cloture vote on Sept. 15, while the SEC and CFTC have signaled they could advance portions of crypto regulation independently if Congress does not pass the bill.

Separately, the IMF confirmed that El Salvador used no public funds for post-review Bitcoin accumulation and transferred majority control of its state-run Chivo wallet to a private operator. The findings mark a notable pivot for the country that became the first nation to adopt Bitcoin as legal tender, signaling a more market-driven approach to its digital asset strategy. Together, these developments underscore a week defined less by price action and more by the slow machinery of crypto regulation across three continents.
