Polish Lawmakers Fail to Override Crypto Bill Veto as CLARITY Act Gains Support

Polish lawmakers fell short in their attempt to override President Karol Nawrocki's veto of crypto legislation designed to strengthen oversight of the country's digital asset market. In a Sept. 5 Sejm vote, 241 members backed overriding the veto while 198 opposed it, with three abstentions, leaving the motion 25 votes short of the required three-fifths majority. The defeat comes as an investigation into collapsed exchange Zondacrypto widens, with Prime Minister Donald Tusk citing witness testimony alleging payments and attempts to influence politicians linked to Poland's previous government. Zondacrypto's Estonian operator, BB Trade Estonia, was declared bankrupt in August, and Polish prosecutors are now investigating suspected fraud and money laundering connected to the platform.

The National Sheriffs' Association has dropped its opposition to the CLARITY Act ahead of a key Senate vote this month, removing one of the most significant law-enforcement obstacles to the crypto market structure bill. The group shifted its position to "neutral" in a letter to Senate leaders, acknowledging work by Congress, the Trump administration, and other stakeholders to address legal and enforcement concerns. The association had previously warned that provisions exempting some crypto mixers from registration requirements could hinder law enforcement's ability to trace transactions and recover stolen funds, with one sheriff stating in July that the legislation protected "the crypto industry, not the public." Senate Majority Leader John Thune has filed for a cloture vote on Sept. 15.

The IMF confirmed that El Salvador used no public funds for its post-review Bitcoin accumulation, transferring majority control of the state-backed Chivo wallet to a private operator. The development adds credibility to President Nayib Bukele's ongoing Bitcoin strategy, which has drawn scrutiny from international financial bodies since the country adopted BTC as legal tender in 2021. Meanwhile, the SEC and CFTC have signaled they could proceed with portions of crypto regulation independently if Congress fails to pass comprehensive legislation, suggesting a fragmented regulatory path forward for digital assets in the United States.
