Qubic Restarts Blockchain After $1.4M Hack, Opens Recovery Claims
Layer-1 blockchain Qubic resumed processing ticks at 8 p.m. on October 19 after its validators halted the network at tick 85,371,949. The shutdown followed an exploit of predictable wallet seeds that enabled an attacker to drain approximately $1.4 million in QU tokens from 1,404 accounts.
Qubic’s Computors approved a recovery plan and launched a claims platform for affected wallet holders. Users can check their addresses and submit requests through Qubic’s reclaim portal, with claims open until May 1, 2027.
The vulnerability affected seeds generated by an older version of Qubic’s web wallet on certain Apple devices and browsers. An insecure random-number generator could produce predictable wallet seeds, allowing attackers to access exposed accounts.
Qubic released web wallet version 4.26.4 on October 19 to fix the seed-generation flaw. The project advised anyone who created a wallet before that release to treat it as insecure, install version 4.26.4 or later, create a new wallet and transfer their funds immediately. Users were also told never to reuse the compromised wallet.
