Qubic Restarts Blockchain, Opens Claims After $1.4M Wallet Seed Hack
Layer-1 blockchain Qubic has resumed network operations and launched a recovery claims process following a $1.4 million hack that drained QU tokens from 1,404 user wallets through a predictable seed-generation flaw. According to the project's latest update, Qubic's blockchain explorer confirmed the network resumed processing ticks at 8:00 pm on Oct. 19, advancing beyond tick 85,371,949, where it had been halted on Sunday to prevent further movement of stolen funds.
The vulnerability stemmed from an insecure random-number generator in Qubic's web wallet, which produced predictable wallet seeds on certain Apple devices and browsers. Attackers exploited this flaw to drain QU tokens from affected accounts, prompting Qubic to freeze the chain. The project said it has since patched the seed-generation issue in web wallet version 4.26.4, released on Oct. 19.
Qubic's validators, known as Computors, approved a recovery plan that includes a dedicated reclaim platform where affected users can verify their addresses and submit compensation claims. The claims window will remain open until May 1, 2027, giving impacted wallet holders several months to file.
The team issued a stern warning to users who created wallets with Qubic's web wallet before version 4.26.4, advising them to treat those wallets as compromised regardless of whether funds were touched. Qubic recommended users immediately update to the latest web wallet version, generate a new wallet, and migrate funds as soon as possible. As an extra precaution, users have been told to discontinue use of any wallets created with the older vulnerable software.
