Ray Dalio Recommends Bitcoin and Gold as US Debt Crisis Looms

Bridgewater Associates founder Ray Dalio is urging investors to allocate a portion of their portfolios to Bitcoin and gold, warning that a US debt crisis could materialize within the next one to five years if current fiscal policies remain unchanged. In a Friday LinkedIn post, the billionaire hedge fund manager said investors should overweight Bitcoin and gold relative to debt-based assets such as bonds, citing rising risks from internal political and external geopolitical conflicts.

Dalio recommended holding between 10% and 15% of one's portfolio in gold, alongside "a bit of Bitcoin," as a hedge against potential currency devaluation and sovereign debt instability. "My guess, which I suppose will be a bad one, is that [a US debt crisis] will come in three years, give or take two, if the course we're on is not changed," Dalio wrote. With an estimated net worth exceeding $15 billion, Dalio's endorsement carries significant weight among institutional and retail investors seeking guidance during periods of macroeconomic uncertainty.

The comments mark a notable evolution in Dalio's stance on digital assets. Although he previously argued that Bitcoin could not fully replace gold as a store of value and raised concerns about privacy risks and quantum computing threats, his position has steadily shifted. In July 2025, Dalio disclosed he held "some, but not much" Bitcoin and echoed his current recommendation to allocate up to 15% of a portfolio to crypto and gold combined. Back in 2022, months before a major crypto market downturn, he suggested that a 1% to 2% Bitcoin allocation was "reasonable."

Dalio's latest remarks come as Bitcoin trades around $77,379, with the broader crypto market showing mixed performance. His warning about the absence of financial privacy in potential central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) underscores his broader thesis on why decentralized assets like Bitcoin may become increasingly attractive to investors navigating an uncertain monetary landscape.
