SEC Names Tokenization a High-Risk Focus for 2027 Exams
The US Securities and Exchange Commission has included tokenization in its fiscal 2027 examination priorities, identifying tokenized securities as an emerging risk for market infrastructure and clearing agencies. This marks a shift from the agency’s fiscal 2026 priorities, which did not explicitly address tokenization.
Under Regulation SCI, the SEC said its examinations of critical market infrastructure will focus on tokenization, extended trading hours, quantum computing and super intelligence, or SI. The agency also listed tokenization among the high-risk areas it plans to review at clearing agencies, alongside default management, securities lending and operational resilience.
Cryptocurrencies remain absent as a standalone examination priority for the second consecutive year. The SEC last devoted a dedicated section to crypto assets in its fiscal 2025 priorities, even as traditional financial institutions continue expanding their involvement in tokenized markets. Earlier in October, an OKX and Intercontinental Exchange joint venture filed to launch a platform offering tokenized shares in more than 60 US-listed companies.
The SEC’s focus signals growing regulatory scrutiny of securities tokenization and the infrastructure connecting traditional markets with blockchain-based systems. While digital assets are not being examined as a separate category, tokenized securities are emerging as a priority within broader reviews of market stability, clearing and operational risk.
