South Korea to Meet Crypto Exchanges Over Tax Delay Push to 2029

South Korea's senior finance officials are set to meet major cryptocurrency exchanges on Tuesday to discuss the country's planned crypto taxation, as legislative efforts to delay the levy gain momentum. According to Yonhap, the consultation will bring together representatives from Upbit, Bithumb, Coinone, DigitalX, and Gopax, alongside executives of the Digital Asset Exchange Alliance (DAXA). Attending officials include Kwon Dae-young, first vice minister of finance and economy, and Yoo Young-jun, director general for digital financial policy at the Financial Services Commission.

The meeting comes after Democratic Party lawmaker Park Min-gyu introduced a bill on Friday seeking to postpone the crypto tax until Jan. 1 of the second year after South Korea begins sharing data under the OECD's Crypto-Asset Reporting Framework (CARF). With the first data exchange expected in 2027, the proposed timeline would push the tax's start date to 2029. South Korean regulators have already delayed the crypto tax three times, with the most recent postponement moving implementation to 2027 amid political disagreement and industry concerns over exchange readiness and threshold levels.

An exchange official told Yonhap on Sunday that unresolved transaction rules and tight infrastructure timelines support further delay. "Standards for different transaction types have not yet been finalized, and time is running short for practical preparations on the infrastructure side," the official said, adding that there is a "shared view in favor of postponing the start of taxation." The Tuesday meeting signals the government is engaging directly with industry stakeholders as the January implementation deadline approaches.
