Stablecoin Remittances 84% Cheaper Than Traditional Transfers: Report
Stablecoin-funded remittances remain significantly cheaper than traditional cross-border transfers, according to a third-quarter 2026 report from Borderless.xyz. Sending a $200 remittance through stablecoin payment rails costs a median of 1% ($2), compared with 6.36% ($12.72) for traditional remittances based on World Bank data — an 84% reduction in fees. Savings are even more pronounced in emerging markets: in Sub-Saharan Africa, stablecoin remittances cost 2.9% versus 8.46% for traditional transfers, while in Latin America the figures are 1.25% and 5.64%, respectively.
Business payments show similar advantages. A $10,000 stablecoin-funded transfer to the eurozone costs as little as $26 via the lowest-cost provider, or $52 at the median provider across all corridors. By comparison, a traditional international bank wire for the same amount runs between $135 and $150, including transfer fees and an assumed 1% foreign-exchange margin — highlighting stablecoins' edge on larger cross-border transactions.
Beyond cost, stablecoin payouts settle far faster. Through Brazil's PIX network, funds arrive in two minutes at the median; Mexico's SPEI network takes a comparable three minutes; and Colombia's PSE network also records a two-minute median. Traditional SWIFT wires typically settle the next business day, with the slowest 10% taking three business days. However, reliability varies: Mexico's SPEI completed 98.6% of payouts, Brazil's PIX 97.8%, Colombia's PSE 79%, and Costa Rica's SINPE just 73% — suggesting that last-mile integration remains a critical factor for stablecoin adoption. The report comes amid surging stablecoin transaction volumes and growing institutional interest in digital dollar payment rails.
