Tether Backs Bolivian Fintech Peso to Expand USDT Payments in Latin America

Tether has led a pre-seed funding round in Bolivian fintech Peso, a company that integrates USDT stablecoin payments into food delivery apps, QR-based merchant services, and local banking networks via ACH transfers. The investment, announced Wednesday, will support Peso's expansion into Brazil, Colombia, and Argentina, where it connects stablecoin rails to real-world commerce. Tether did not disclose the size of the investment.

Peso has already integrated USDT payments into Yango's food delivery platform in Bolivia, enabling customers to pay for orders using the stablecoin. The company also offers point-of-sale services for merchants and virtual accounts linked to Bolivia's banking system, positioning itself as a bridge between digital dollars and traditional financial infrastructure across underserved markets.

The move comes amid Bolivia's deepening US dollar shortage, which has driven increased demand for dollar-denominated alternatives like USDT. The Bolivian government announced plans in November 2025 to integrate cryptocurrencies and stablecoins into the financial system, and in July 2026 began considering a regulatory framework that would recognize USDT for payments, savings, and trade alongside the boliviano and US dollar. Tether separately announced on Tuesday a partnership with lending platform Tala and El Dorado to offer USDT-denominated credit through digital wallets on the Tempo blockchain, signaling a broader push into Latin American fintech infrastructure.
