Thailand SEC Proposes Retail Crypto Derivatives Rules; Strive Buys 1,800 BTC
Thailand's Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has opened a public consultation on proposed amendments that would allow intermediaries to facilitate retail access to certain digital asset derivatives traded on overseas exchanges. Under the proposal, eligible products must resemble crypto derivatives already traded in Thailand, including matching underlying assets, maturity, leverage, and settlement methods. They must also be listed on exchanges that use a central counterparty for clearing and are supervised by regulators belonging to specified international regulatory or exchange bodies. The consultation runs through Sept. 30, and the SEC has not yet announced an implementation date. The move builds on a March 5 notification that formally designated cryptocurrencies and digital tokens as permissible derivatives underlyings, with the Thailand Futures Exchange currently in discussions on potential contract specifications.
Asset manager and Bitcoin treasury company Strive acquired 1,800 BTC for approximately $143 million last week, lifting its total holdings to 23,156 BTC and making it the fifth-largest publicly traded corporate Bitcoin holder. The purchase was executed at an average price of $79,431 per coin, including fees and expenses, and followed a 1,110 BTC acquisition the previous week for roughly $81.5 million. Strive's rapid accumulation underscores continued institutional demand for Bitcoin as a treasury reserve asset even amid ongoing market volatility.
Meanwhile, Strategy resumed its Bitcoin purchases after a two-month pause, acquiring approximately $370 million worth of BTC in its latest buy. The move signals a return to active accumulation by the largest publicly traded corporate Bitcoin holder, which has been a bellwether for institutional treasury adoption since pioneering the model. Together, Strive's and Strategy's recent acquisitions highlight sustained corporate appetite for direct Bitcoin exposure as regulatory frameworks evolve and crypto-linked products gain broader legitimacy in traditional capital markets.
