Trump Avoids ‘Crypto’ Label at White House Cybercrime Roundtable
President Donald Trump discussed several forms of cybercrime during a White House roundtable but did not use the term “crypto.” Instead, he referred to “cybercurrency,” a dated term for cryptocurrency. Trump said Americans lost more than $20 billion to impersonation schemes, ransomware attacks, scam centers and other crimes in 2025.
Trump also said federal officials froze $1 billion in digital assets linked to foreign scammers and prevented another $1.6 billion in losses under a March executive order. Attorney General Todd Blanche and Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin similarly avoided explicitly mentioning cryptocurrency or digital assets, with Mullin referring to “digital extortion.”
The figures came amid increased attention to crypto-related fraud. The FBI reported that Americans lost $11 billion to scams involving digital assets in 2025, including crimes conducted through crypto ATMs. Cointelegraph said it requested comment from the White House but did not receive an immediate response.
The roundtable also carried political significance as Trump, his family and their business interests face scrutiny over alleged crypto conflicts. Public Citizen estimated that alleged schemes linked to Trump cost investors about $4.7 billion, while World Liberty Financial’s USD1 stablecoin has drawn attention over its use in a reported $2 billion Binance investment. Trump’s Official Trump memecoin is also scheduled to hold another tokenholder dinner on Nov. 22.
