Telegram is one of the most popular messaging apps in the world, with over 900 million active users. Whether you're switching from WhatsApp or starting fresh, this guide walks you through everything you need to know.
Step 1: Download & Install
Telegram is available on every platform:
- iOS — App Store
- Android — Google Play Store
- Desktop — telegram.org (Windows, Mac, Linux)
- Web — web.telegram.org (no install needed)
You can use Telegram on multiple devices simultaneously, and all your messages sync across them.
Step 2: Create Your Account
Telegram uses your phone number to create an account. Open the app, enter your number, and verify with the code sent via SMS. Then set your name and optional profile photo.
Tip: You can later set a username (like @yourname) so people can find you without knowing your phone number.
Step 3: Start Messaging
Tap the pencil/compose icon to start a new chat. You can:
- Send text, photos, videos, files (up to 2GB each)
- Record voice and video messages
- Share your location
- Use stickers, GIFs, and emoji reactions
Step 4: Explore Groups & Channels
Groups can hold up to 200,000 members and are great for communities. Channels are one-way broadcasts perfect for following news, creators, or announcements. Use the search bar to discover public groups and channels.
Step 5: Try Telegram Bots
Bots are automated accounts that can do useful things. For example, @userid_checkbot instantly shows your Telegram User ID. Just search for a bot by name and tap Start.
